Dear World Future Society members,

I would like to invite you to our upcoming BC chapter webinar on September 26, 2012 ( 6 - 7 pm) at http://meet57831696.adobeconnect.com/wfs-bc/. New members/guests are very welcomed.

"Prophecies of Joom - An Examination of a New Technological Paradigm That Will Change the World.

Periodically throughout human history groundbreaking scientific  and technological innovations have led to massive paradigm shifts that fundamentally changed society.  Examples include the shift from stone to metal implements, the change from a nomadic life to permanent settlements with agriculture, the industrial revolution, Moor’s Law and the electronics revolution and so on.   Despite powerful indicators that a paradigm shift is about to occur, many organizations that are deeply entrenched in the old way of doing things manage to be caught by surprise.  Witness the Swiss watch makers that were almost wiped out by digital timing systems, companies such as Kodak that were blindsided by digital cameras and the thousands of established organizations that will be completely wiped out by the introduction of affordable electric vehicles. The purpose of this Webinar is to discuss a technological paradigm that will completely transform the world as we know it and that will eventually impact virtually every person on earth.  This technology is Just On Order Manufacturing (JOOM) and it will impact every aspect of our economy including product design, manufacturing, marketing, inventory, shipping and delivery.  This presentation will discuss the technological innovations that have combined and culminated in the development of the first primitive JOOM facilities.  An examination will then be made of that rapid advances that are currently being made in the technology and of the trends that will influence how JOOM will most likely evolve and how these trends will likely impact human society in the long term.

Presenter: Dr. Paul D. Tinari Ph.D., P.Eng., Professional Futurist

Director, Pacific Institute for Advanced Study

Please join us for the 6th Annual STAR-TIDES Fall Field demonstration from Tuesday October 2nd to Friday October 5th at Fort Lesley J. McNair in Washington, DC.   The event is free to participate and open to the public.  We will showcase a variety of low-cost sustainable technologies across eight areas: 1) Water, 2) Power, 3) Shelter, 4) Heating/Cooling, 5) Lighting, 6) Integrated & Solar Cooking, 7) Sanitation and 8) Information Communication Technology.

Our next demo is coming up this October, and we will be displaying a range of energy solutions for Humanitarian Assistance/Disaster Relief. We are also working on a concept called "Integrated Infrastructure", where we seek to provide a combined package of solutions to the affected population- shelter, power, water, energy, communication and sanitation in a single "house" structure, rather than piece meal.

The event is free to participate so feel free to invite your colleagues or pass along to interested parties.

The Global Future: Prospects and Strategies

 2011 State of the Future

The 15th Anniversary Edition

The world is getting richer, healthier, better educated, living longer, and is more peaceful and better connected; yet half the world is potentially unstable. Food prices are rising, water tables are falling, corruption and organized crime is increasing, environmental viability for life support is diminishing, debt and economic insecurity are increasing, climate change continues, and the gap between the rich and poor is widening dangerously. The world is in a race between implementing ever-increasing ways to improve the human condition and the seemingly ever-increasing complexity and scale of global problems. So, how are we doing in this race? What’s the score so far? What are some strategies to improve our prospects?

The 2011 State of the Future addresses these questions with input from futurists, business planners, and scholars around the world, who work for governments, universities, NGOs, corporations, and UN and other international organizations. This year’s report has chapters on the future of the Egyptian revolution, 15 Global Challenges, scenarios for Latin America, environmental security, and future elements of arts, media, and entertainment that could better bring what’s important for the future of civilization to the public.

A must read for any decisionmaker (Enrique Peña Nieto, Governor, State of Mexico); The best introduction to the major global issues and long-term remedies (Global Foresight Books);  Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, should read this incredible document, period (Technological Forecasting & Social Change); Invaluable insights (Ban Ki-moon, UN Secretary-General).

The Millennium Project was established in 1996 as the first globalized think tank. It conducts independent futures research via its 40 Nodes around the world that connect global and local perspectives. Nodes are groups of individuals and institutions that pick the brains of their region and feedback the global results. It is supported by UN organizations, multinational corporations, universities, foundations, and the governments of Azerbaijan, Kuwait, South Korea, and the United States. This is not the “UN Millennium Project” headed by Prof. Sachs that produced scholarly papers to address the 8 Millennium Development Goals several years ago.  Copies of the 2011 State of the Future will be available at this event. The event will be taped and available at http://www.wilsoncenter.org several days later.
